Choosing acacia decking comes down to matching board thickness and grade to the joist spacing beneath it, because Robinia pseudoacacia is dense enough to carry serious loads but only if the structure underneath respects its span limits. As a working reference, boards around 21 millimeters thick call for joists roughly 40 to 50 centimeters apart, while 26 to 28 millimeter boards can stretch that spacing toward 60 centimeters in residential use. How Do You Choose Acacia Decking Boards by Thickness and Grade?
Thickness is the first filter. Acacia decking is commonly milled between roughly 20 and 28 millimeters, sometimes thicker for commercial or public projects. The 21 millimeter profile suits residential terraces with joists at moderate spacing; the heavier 25 to 28 millimeter boards allow wider spans, feel more solid underfoot and resist deflection on structures where the subframe cannot be tightened further. Anything below 20 millimeters should be treated with caution for ground-level decks, since thin boards over uneven joists will cup and bounce.
Grade is the second filter, and it concerns sapwood more than knots. Acacia heartwood is olive green to brown when fresh and weathers to silver; the sapwood is pale yellowish and carries almost none of the species’ natural durability. A higher grade, sometimes labeled first quality or exclusive, restricts sapwood content and allows only small, sound knots. Lower grades admit more sapwood, larger knots and some pith, and they remain usable, but only where the buyer accepts silvering, small losses and local repairs over the years. What Is the Correct Joist Spacing for an Acacia Terrace?
Joist spacing, or the distance between the centerlines of the supporting battens, depends on three variables: board thickness, board width and expected load. For 21 millimeter acacia boards, a spacing of about 40 to 50 centimeters on center is the widely used range for household terraces. For 26 to 28 millimeter boards, spacing can extend to roughly 60 centimeters for foot traffic. Wide boards, above 140 millimeters, behave differently from narrow ones at the same thickness: wide flats hold more water and cup more readily, so reducing either the width or the spacing compensates.
Diagonal or herringbone layouts effectively shorten the span each board crosses, and they tolerate slightly wider joist grids. Balconies and roof decks, where furniture, planters and people concentrate loads, warrant the tighter end of every range.
The joists themselves deserve as much attention as the spacing. Acacia joists are ideal because the support ages at the same rate as the decking; if another timber is used, it must be at least as durable or isolated from ground contact, for example on adjustable pedestals or concrete blocks with a moisture break. Contact points, where board rests on joist, are the zones where water lingers longest, so a level or gently sloped substructure, about one to two percent fall toward a drain, protects the whole surface.
Fixing follows from spacing. Stainless steel screws with a milling head, driven into pre-drilled holes at the point where the board crosses the joist, remain the standard method for acacia, which is hard enough to snap ordinary screws. Hidden clips exist, but they demand very regular boards and a spacing plan fixed in advance, since the clip positions cannot be adjusted afterward. Gaps of 5 to 8 millimeters between boards allow seasonal movement and drainage of debris.
What Is a Ventilated Facade and Why Does Acacia Need One?
A ventilated, or rainscreen, facade is a cladding arrangement in which the boards are fixed to vertical battens mounted on the structural wall, leaving an air cavity of typically 20 to 40 millimeters between the back of the cladding and the wall itself. The cavity is open at the bottom and the top, and often at window reveals, so convection draws moisture outward. Water that gets behind the boards drains down the cavity rather than being held against the wood.
Acacia needs this ventilation for a simple reason: durability class 1 or 2 describes wood that can dry. The heartwood resists fungi in damp conditions, but any hardwood fixed flush against a masonry or timber wall in a Central European climate will absorb condensation and wind-driven rain on one face and stay wet on the other, which is the asymmetric moisture regime that drives cupping, splitting and surface decay. In tests and in practice, the same species lasts decades longer when both faces can breathe.
Practical rules for the battens follow: vertical battens of durable timber or pressure-treated wood, fixed to the wall with corrosion resistant anchors, with the cavity kept clear of mortar droppings; horizontal boards then fix to the battens with two stainless screws per crossing point, pre-drilled. An insect mesh at the cavity openings keeps wasps and bees out without stopping airflow. Board ends should be cut with a slight fall, or fitted with an end drip, so water does not pool on the top edge of the last board.
Maintenance: What Changes Outdoors Over the Years
Uncoated acacia greys within a season or two, the same graying that affects all exposed hardwoods, as ultraviolet light degrades lignin at the surface and rain rinses the residue away. The grey layer is stable and protective in its way, and many owners simply let it form, cleaning the surface once or twice a year with water and a stiff brush.
Owners who prefer the warm brown of fresh acacia can slow the graying with a penetrating UV protective oil, reapplied at intervals that depend on exposure, typically every one to two years on a south facing facade or terrace. Film forming varnishes are generally avoided outdoors, because they crack on dense hardwoods and trap moisture beneath the film. Local repairs, a board replaced or flipped, are straightforward if spare boards from the original batch were set aside, since color matching after years of weathering is otherwise difficult.
